How to run and maintain your open fire

At Randalls Firewood, we love when our customers are running an open fire, to us it is the original fire in England, and is still common in older homes. If you have one, then we recommend the following advice for keeping it working effectively, for you and your family to enjoy it year after year.

Smoke control areas – In many UK towns and cities, you must burn only “Ready to Burn” fuels. Randalls kiln dried logs are fully certified, with moisture levels at an average of 10%, so you can enjoy your fire responsibly.

Chimney sweeping – Book a professional sweep at least once a year.

Ventilation – Make sure your room has a little fresh air to help the fire draw well and burn cleanly.

How to light & keep your fire going

To us, an open fire is something that should last all night. Starting and maintaining the fire in the right way, will ensure you have a continuous fire that lights quickly, and as the night moves on, doesn’t use too many logs.

Prepare the grate – Clear away old ash and set up your fireguard if you use one.

Add firelighters and kindling – Generally use 1-2 firelighters and a good handful of kindling to get the fire burning.

Add smokeless fuel (optional) – In smoke-controlled areas, you can place a little smokeless fuel at the base for extra heat. This partners with the kindling to get the initial heat of the fire increasing quickly.

Add some slightly smaller logs to the kindling.

Once the fire is established – add some larger logs.

Adjust airflow as needed for a steady flame.
